In this election year, more women ran for office than ever before. We should all take a moment to celebrate those who ran and have inspired the next generation of leaders. Some of the many womxn who ran just made history by becoming the “firsts” at the congressional and state levels. Keep reading to learn more about the women in politics who made history in this election.
- Anna Tovar, Arizona - First Democratic Latina to serve as Arizona corporation commissioner.
- Sepi Shyne, California - First Iranian-American and first LGBTQ Iranian to be elected to the West Hollywood City Council
- Iman Jodeh, Colorado - First Muslim woman to win a seat in the Colorado state legislature.
- Sarah McBride, Delaware - First openly transgender state senator in the nation.
- Madinah Wilson-Anton, Delaware - First Muslim elected to the Delaware legislature.
- Michele Rayner, Florida - First Black LGBTQ woman to win a seat in the Florida legislature.
- Angela Brown, Georgia - First Black woman to be elected Cobb County Superior Court Judge.
- Patsy Austin-Gatson, Georgia - First Black woman to serve as District Attorney in Gwinnett County
- Kim Jackson, Georgia - First openly LGBTQ member of the State Senate in Georgia’s history.

- Ashley Hinson, Iowa - First Republican woman to serve in the U.S. House from Iowa.
- Stephanie Byers, Kansas - First transgender elected official in the Kansas House of Representatives and first transgender woman of color elected to any state legislature in the U.S.
- Michelle Fischbach, Minnesota: First Republican woman to represent Minnesota in the U.S. House since 2015.

- Catherine Truitt, North Carolina: First Republican woman to serve as Superintendent of Public Instruction in North Carolina.
