Rebecca Yang Appointed to California Instructional Quality Commission

Meet IGNITE intern Rebecca Yang, a high school leader taking her passion for education policy to the state level!

Rebecca was recently appointed as Student Commissioner on the California Instructional Quality Commission for the 2026–2027 term. Rebecca will serve as the sole student voice on the commission that is responsible for shaping California's curriculum frameworks and evaluating instructional materials for public schools statewide.

For Rebecca, this appointment connects directly to her passion and experience. Having spent the past four years creating learning materials and teaching students, she is eager to bring student perspectives into state policy conversations. Her goal is to gather stories directly from her peers to advocate for enriched, equitable, and engaging instructional materials for all California students.

Rebecca currently spent her summer interning with IGNITE, where she contributed to our national curriculum and advocacy toolkits—an experience that has deepened her understanding of how education extends beyond traditional classroom walls.

Student commissioners are powerful reminders that young people aren’t simply consumers of education; they are eager to shape the learning policies that directly affect them. By bringing her lived experience to the commission, Rebecca is excited to ensure that student voices shape the future of learning across the state.
