Mi Tang elected Senator at UC, Berkeley
Meet IGNITE alumna, Mi Tang, newly elected senator of the Associated Students of the University of California, Berkeley!
Mi Tang, a sophomore majoring in political science and minoring in political economy, is now a student government official at the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley). She was recently elected to the 2026–27 Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC), as 1 of 20 new senators serving in the legislative branch of the student government that is responsible for representing students across the campus, controlling the ASUC's $12 million budget, and addressing critical issues such as campus safety and student healthcare.
Mi is a Vietnamese immigrant, who moved to San Francisco when she was only three years old. Growing up in a low-income area, she understands how socioeconomic disparities affect access to education and professional opportunities, and she brings this lived experience with her as she advocates for marginalized groups on campus. The Southeast Asian community, which comprises less than 10% of the total student population at UC Berkeley, is especially near to Mi's heart. She has been serving as the Chief of Staff to the current Southeast Asia Community-Endorsed for the past school year, which has given her the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and earn their endorsement for her new role.
Mi has committed to uplifting and championing the needs of the most vulnerable communities since high school. After participating in an IGNITE the Capitol program and witnessing the impact of community advocacy and organizing, Mi founded an IGNITE high school chapter at Balboa High School. As chapter president, she facilitated campus events and workshops to empower her peer to flex their political power and organized advocacy days where she brought her peers to Sacramento to champion bills addressing menstrual equity and protection for sexual assault survivors. Mi has expressed gratitude to the IGNITE community, noting "IGNITE believed in me and invested in my growth... IGNITE gave me systems and tools to tap into my political power, and I will carry these experiences in my ASUC senator tenure." Join us in congratulating Mi as she assumes her new leadership role!
