Announcing the Norma Stone Young Women Run Texas Conference
Family Tribute to Norma Stone
From her 3 children and their spouses:
Mike & Betsy Stone, Lisa Stone & Scott Cantor, and Angela Stone & Michael Stehling
Norma Stone is a remarkable person. From her childhood, she learned not to shy away from challenges or let gender stereotypes and biases stand in her way. Throughout her life, she has been a dedicated, stubborn, and persistent advocate for the causes and people she believes in. By her actions, she inspires others to do good and be better.
As the operator of two day-care centers in Houston in the 1960s and ‘70s, she modeled the creation of safe, nurturing and educational environments for young children, where working families could entrust their children with confidence and her staff were respected and nurtured as professionals, not babysitters. Then, armed with a doctorate in Early Childhood Education, she was an advocate for legislation and regulation to assure that all families and children in Texas had access to such resources.
Through her manifest character and actions, she has been a role model for her children and grandchildren. She is a woman of great intelligence, strength and conviction, and her vision of and willingness to work for a more open world with opportunities for all, regardless of gender, race, social class or sexual orientation has inspired her family to work to leave their own positive imprints as well.
Norma’s work with IGNITE is fully in keeping with her values and priorities as expressed throughout her 93 years. She has always been an advocate for full equality for women in society, even before anyone knew what a feminist was. Her family is very proud and happy to dedicate the Norma Stone Young Women Run Texas Conference in her honor.
