You have the power to make a difference. Did you know that state policies and decisions made by your state's lawmakers have a huge impact on your life and on your community? Join IGNITE, MassNow and other young leaders from across the state on February 8, 2024 for a full day of advocacy at the Massachusetts state capitol. You'll learn how to amplify your voice, advocate for the issues you care most about and make a real impact. Together, we'll fight for a better tomorrow.

Time: 12 - 5 PM

At IGNITE the Capitol, we'll provide you with the tools, training and confidence to use your political power to shape policy agenda and champion bills in your state. Then, we’ll meet with legislators and legislative aides at the State Capitol as you voice your concerns and visions to your elected leaders. During our advocacy day, you'll:

  • Learn why it’s important to contact your legislators  
  • Discover how to advocate effectively and participate in the lawmaking process 
  • Champion state-specific bills as you meet with legislators (an overview of the bills is available below)

At IGNITE the Capitol, we'll be advocating for the following bills. More information about each of the bills will be provided prior to the event.  

Support H.669/ S.422 - Supporting parents running for public office

H.669/ S.422 was introduced in the Massachusetts State House by Representative Mike Conolly. This bill would allow candidates running for public office to use their campaign funds for their childcare needs. 

Support S.2016 - Gender parity & racial and ethnic diversity on public boards 

Bill H.3095/S.2016 was introduced in the Massachusetts State House by Representatives Tram T. Nguyen & Dawne Shand and Senator Jason Lewis in the State Senate. This bill would ensure gender parity and racial and ethnic diversity on public boards and commissions.  

Support H.534/S.1381 - To increase access to disposable menstrual products 

Bill H.534/S.1381 was introduced in the Massachusetts State House by Representatives Jay D. Livingstone & Christine B. Barber and Senator Patricia D. Jehlen in the State Senate. This bill would increase access to menstrual products in K-12 schools, prisons/jails, and shelters.  

Support S.268/H.544 - Healthy Youth Act 

S.268/H.544 was authored by Senator Sal DiDomenico in the Massachusetts State Senate and by Representatives James J. O'Day & Vanna Howard in the State House under “An Act Relative to Health Youth.” This bill would help institute a comprehensive educational curriculum on inclusive sex and relationships for students in public schools, while allowing schools the opportunity to select their own instructional materials, and set an age and sex in which students are taught the information.

Mass NOW  

For over 50 years Mass NOW has been one of the leading multi-issue, multi-strategy feminist organizations in Massachusetts, fighting for feminist democracy. We have 40+ intersectional feminist bills on our legislative agenda, top of the priority list is the I AM Bill (Increasing Access to Menstrual products) which would require that all public schools, incarcerated facilities and homeless shelters in Massachusetts provide free disposable menstrual products.
