A timeline of Sarah McBride's career

Delaware native Sarah McBride is a politician and activist. McBride is a State Senator-elect of the state of Delaware. McBride will be the first transgender state senator in the history of the United States. Here's a timeline of key moments in McBride's career.

Sarah McBride was born on August 9, 1990, in Wilmington, Delaware. Her parents are David McBride and Sally McBride.

McBride was also involved in several political campaigns. In 2008, she worked for former Delaware Governor Jack Markell’s campaign and in 2010, for former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden’s re-election campaign.  

McBride graduated from American University in Washington, D.C, where she was elected as Student Body President in 2011. 

In 2012, McBride came out in American University’s newspaper, The Eagle. Her coming out story was also featured by other media outlets, such as The Huffington Post and NPR.

McBride interned at the White House under the Obama administration in 2012. She was an intern at the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs and was the first openly transgender woman to intern at the White House.

McBride has been working at Equality Delaware, serving on the Board of Directors since 2013, leading lobbying efforts for legislation to protect transgender Delawareans.

In August 2014, McBride married Andrew Cray. Unfortunately, Cray passed away from cancer shortly after their marriage. 

McBride delivered a TED Talk in April of 2016. The title of her TED Talk was "Gender assigned to us at birth should not dictate who we are". 

McBride addressed at the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, becoming the first openly transgender woman to speak at a national party convention. McBride received tremendous support and praise from the public following her speech at the 2016 DNC.

McBride published her book in 2018 titled "Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality”.

McBride officially announced her candidacy for Delaware state senator on July 9, 2019, zeroing in on affordable health care and paid leave.

On September 15, 2020, McBride won the Democratic Party primary in Delaware’s first Senate district. McBride was elected to the Delaware Senate after she gained more than 70% of the votes in the 2020 general election.

McBride will be sworn in as a Delaware State Senator in January 2021. She will be the highest-ranking openly transgender official in the history of the United States.
