Meet IGNITE the Vote alumna Kelsey Fong, a high school junior taking her civic leadership skills to her local government!
Kelsey was recently appointed to serve on the Walnut Creek Youth Leadership Commission, where she will represent the voices and interests of young people in her community. Kelsey brings a strong foundation of service and leadership to the commission. She’s completed extensive volunteer work, which has given her the opportunity to connect with a diversity of individuals in her community, in addition to serving in student leadership positions at her school for the past four years.
Kelsey credits her experience with the IGNITE the Vote program for deepening her understanding of why youth representation matters in government and inspiring her to seek this appointment. Through the program, she also received mentorship from IGNITE staff, including Chief of Strategy and Impact Christine Hernandez, who shared this commission opportunity with her. Kelsey is also helping expand the IGNITE network, as she’s just launched a new IGNITE chapter at her high school.
Youth commissioners play an essential role in bridging the gap between local government and the next generation. By bringing her community-first mindset to the Walnut Creek Youth Leadership Commission, Kelsey will represent her peers and ensure they have a meaningful role in shaping their city's future.
