Meet IGNITE alumna Geovanie (Geo) Ordoñez, a new mom using her voice to advocate for library services in Texas!
Geo was recently appointed to serve on her local library advisory board in Cedar Hill, Texas. During her journey as a new mom, the public library offered a safe space for learning and exploring for Geo and her daughter, Valentina, who proudly received her first library card at just three months old—making her the youngest Cedar Hill Library member.
As a new board member, Geo is eager to ensure local libraries remain accessible and welcoming to all families. She'll be advocating for expanded library services, programming, and events in multiple languages to better serve her diverse community.
Geo credits her time as an IGNITE fellow, from 2017 to 2018, with giving her the foundation to take on this public leadership role. She shared, “IGNITE gave me the confidence to apply and interview with city council. It also gave me a strong network to speak on my behalf and my work ethic. It trained me to be an effective board member."
Public libraries are vital hubs that play a crucial role in protecting free, equitable educational resources so that every neighbor has the opportunity to learn and grow. By bringing her perspective as a young mother to this board, Geo is helping build a stronger community foundation for the next generation of leaders and ensuring that as young women from different cultural backgrounds explore these spaces, they see leaders who are actively advocating for their future.
