In this election year, more women ran for office than ever before. We should all take a moment to celebrate those who ran and have inspired the next generation of leaders. Some of the many womxn who ran just made history by becoming the “[firsts](https://cawp.rutgers.edu/election-analysis/election-2020-potential-notable-firsts)” at the congressional and state levels. Keep reading to learn more about the women in politics who made history in this election.

- Anna Tovar, Arizona - First Democratic Latina to serve as Arizona corporation commissioner.
- Sepi Shyne, California - First Iranian-American and first LGBTQ Iranian to be elected to the West Hollywood City Council
- Iman Jodeh, Colorado - First Muslim woman to win a seat in the Colorado state legislature.
- Sarah McBride, Delaware - First openly transgender state senator in the nation. 

- Madinah Wilson-Anton, Delaware - First Muslim elected to the Delaware legislature. 
- Michele Rayner, Florida - First Black LGBTQ woman to win a seat in the Florida legislature. 
- Angela Brown, Georgia - First Black woman to be elected Cobb County Superior Court Judge. 
- Patsy Austin-Gatson, Georgia - First Black woman to serve as District Attorney in Gwinnett County 
- Kim Jackson, Georgia - First openly LGBTQ member of the State Senate in Georgia’s history. 
- Regina Lewis-Ward, Georgia - First woman to represent District 109 in the Georgia House of Representatives. 
- Rebecca Mitchell, Georgia - First woman to represent District 106 in the Georgia House of Representatives. 
- Ashley Hinson, Iowa - First Republican woman to serve in the U.S. House from Iowa. 

- Stephanie Byers, Kansas - First transgender elected official in the Kansas House of Representatives and first transgender woman of color elected to any state legislature in the U.S. 
- Michelle Fischbach, Minnesota: First Republican woman to represent Minnesota in the U.S. House since 2015.
- Cori Bush, Missouri: First Black woman to serve in the U.S. Congress and U.S. House from Missouri.
- Catherine Truitt, North Carolina: First Republican woman to serve as Superintendent of Public Instruction in North Carolina. 
- Nicole Malliotakis, New York: First Republican woman of color and first Latina to serve in the U.S. Congress and U.S. House from New York. 
- Amada Marquez Simula, New York: First Latina and the first person of color to serve as Mayor of Columbia Heights 
- Stephanie Bice, Oklahoma: First Republican woman to represent Oklahoma in the U.S. Congress since 2011. 
- Mauree Turner, Oklahoma: First nonbinary state legislator and first Muslim legislator in Oklahoma. 

- Stacy Garrity, Pennsylvania: First Republican woman to serve as Pennsylvania State Treasurer. 
- Nancy Mace, South Carolina: First Republican woman to serve in the U.S. Congress and U.S. House from South Carolina. First woman to represent South Carolina in Congress since 1993. 
- Taylor Small, Vermont: First openly transgender member of Vermont Legislature. 
- Young Kim, California - First AAPI Republican woman to serve in the U.S. Congress and the first Korean-American Republican woman in the U.S. Congress.
